It was a Beautiful Day For U2

U2 took to the stage just as the Yankees took to the field to seal the Angels' post-season fate in the ninth inning of Game 6.

I can't imagine anywhere I would have rather faced that disappointment.

But, more about the Angels tomorrow.

(For the LAST time this season! I promise!)

(Really!)

I bought tickets to the U2 concert MONTHS ago. Like, so long ago that I was still dating Philip when I bought them, and originally invited him to go. Then, well...we know how that worked out, so Marc was going to go with me instead. It was with a heavy heart that he finally opted out, meaning Kelli could go with me!

(I actually tried to get tickets for me and Kelli the last time they were in Salt Lake City in 2005, but that didn't work out. So it's sort of perfect that she ended up coming with me last night.)

When the US tour dates were announced, and the opening bands were announced, I was stoked! Snow Patrol was opening for U2! I LOVE Snow Patrol and have by dying to see them.

Except that Snow Patrol opened for them pretty much everywhere EXCEPT the LA show. We got The Black Eyed Peas. Can I just tell you how much I DON'T love Fergie?

I especially loved the part where she literally said, "You might have heard I have a new album out. It's called The E.N.D."

I'm pretty sure the rest of the group had a *little* something to do with that one.

Black Eyed Peas were pretty good, but I haven't suddenly discovered that I totally love them or anything. In fact, I thought most of their songs were just sort of meh. Although they opened with "Let's Get it Started" which was perfect, and they ended with "I Gotta Feeling" which is a song I desperately wanted to hate. It's really grown on me. The best moment for the Peas, though, was when Fergie sang "Sweet Child of Mine" in a surprise collaboration with Slash from Guns n Roses. I'm not sure what happened there. It seemed really spontaneous and that he happened to be at the show, but a quick google search revealed that these "surprise" performances have happened a few times.

Whatevs.

It was AWESOME.

And then. THEN. Larry Mullen sat down and started playing the drums. And Adam Clayton appeared and joined in with the bass. The Edge appeared and started in on the guitar. And Bono walked out onto the stage.

This thing was CRAZY and gigantic. You can't tell very well from the photos, but this 360 degree stage was one of the biggest things I've ever seen. It looks like a crazy four-legged crab or something, but was beautiful when it was all lit up. There were two moveable bridges that connected the main stage to a second that surrounded the first.

Anyways, then Bono started singing something I had never heard before. I liked it. I just hadn't heard it. I hadn't heard the second song either.

But then they started in on all the hits I love.

  • Beautiful Day
  • Vertigo (Yes, I like "Vertigo".)
  • Where the Streets Have No Name

  • City of Blinding Lights
  • Sunday, Bloody Sunday
  • Mysterious Ways
  • Elevation
  • Walk On
U2 played for over two hours to a screaming crowd of 96,000. The very last song was my personal favorite, "With or Without You." This was very definitely the best concert I have ever been to in my life. Afterwards, I told Kelli that the only way a concert could beat that is if John and George were suddenly resurrected for a Beattles reunion.

There were a lot of crazy moments, too. Like when I almost fell face first down the bleachers. Or when a seriously drunk girl trying to cut in line for the shuttle pissed off the wrong person and ended up with gum in her hair. Or when Kelli accidentally threw a half-eaten piece of cake into the window washer bin at the gas station.

But I had the best time ever. It was amazing to be there and to experience it, even if I could have stayed home and watched the whole thing on YouTube for free.

Did you see it?

Well, if not, I did manage to get a little recording of "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of." The video isn't the greatest, especially because of the guy in front of me that tried desperately to get in my way. But the sound came through pretty well, I think.

(I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this or not, but I think since I recorded it with my own camera, I'm okay. If not, I'm sure someone will let me know and I'll gladly take it down!)

Enjoy!

  1. Sounds like a once in a lifetime evening. Glad you had such a great time. Sorry about the Angels losing to the Yankees, too. (I live in New England and it's practically a law that I hate the Yankees. Even though in reality I'm not much of a sports fan).

  3. So utterly jelous. One of my favourite bands of all time. I saw them once in 1987 during the Joshua Tree tour. We were smack in the middle of about 80,000 people. It was one of the best concerts of my life too!

  10. How cool is that! I'm so excited for you and Kelli. And that stage was beautiful... looked like a cartoon rocket or something from war of the worlds.

And a word or two about Fergie... she's teaching our kids to spell! You know her songs, Fergalicious, delicious, glamorous... how is that for edjumacating our world? : )

  11. It sounds amazing. I'm glad you had something so great to distract from the fact that the Yankees are going to the World Series.

  13. I'm so glad you had so much fun. My friend Derek was also there last night and said it was definitely the best show he'd ever seen. He's a serious Pink Floyd fan, and he actually said "They were better than Floyd last night."

    Whoa.

Jealous... I hear U2 is touring more soon, so I will be sure and get tickets.
