A Long Time Ago...I Got Behind on a Couple of Topics
It's been a busy couple of weeks, what with my Angels getting to GAME 6 of the ALCS! Two more wins and they go to the World Series.
Scratch that. They just need to win one game on Saturday. And then they just need to win one game on Sunday.
And then there was the death of my home internet connection. We still don't have that issue completely fixed, so I'm borrowing until our new DSL service gets set up. I'm told it'll be about two weeks. I might be able to survive that long.
Anyways, I have a bit of catching up to do. There are a few comments and emails that need responses and I thought I'd take a minute to do that here.
First, I will GLADLY post the yearbook photo of Linda, the Evil Softball Coach. I just have to find my freshman yearbook. I'll look for it this weekend!
Lisa asked about my sidebar tag: Bloggers I Know, Follow and Stalk. I try to comment on every blog I follow. I don't always get to do that, because it takes a lot of time and I sometimes get a bit of a backlog when I have to step away from the computer. (There are 19 posts in my Google Reader right now.) Then there are some blogs I stalk. There are a couple of reasons I'll opt to not actually follow a blog. Some of them on the list don't have a Follower option. Some of them post very infrequently. Some of them are more for the occasional perusal and I don't want to feel like I need to leave a comment. I guess "stalk" isn't the right word, since "visit sometimes" might be more appropriate, but I like being a "blog stalker."
Lisa also asked about the LDS church's singles' program down here in my neck of the woods. Anaheim only has a young singles ward, which is for 18-30 year olds. Those wards tend to be heavy on the 18 and very light on the 30. There is a large group of over-30s, but they are usually 60+ and widows. I have a goal to go to some sort of singles' activity and I'm going to. In fact, not too far away, there is a group of apparently awesome people that have created a mid-singles group. It's not officially church-sanctioned, so they don't have their own ward, but they have a lot of activities and events and stuff. The age range is 27-40ish. Perfect. Now I just have to get up the guts to go!
Kristina said she didn't know what the Rally Monkey is, but that he's cute. He sure is cute! I love that monkey! He made his Major League debut during an Angels/Giants game back in the summer of 2000. The Angels were down a run in the ninth inning and the guys in the booth were a little bit bored, so they found this clip from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, slapped a funny graphic on it, and showed it on the scoreboard.
The Angels came back, scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and won the game. The Rally Monkey slowly creeped into pop culture and, some say, helped the Angels win the 2002 World Series, ironically (or maybe coincidentally), against the Giants. These days, the Rally Monkey is alive and well and makes special appearances in film clips ranging from The Sandlot to Psycho to the video for "Bohemian Rhapsody". The clips are so funny that even Derek Jeter of the Yankees, laughed at the Monkeys of the Caribbean when the Yanks were about to (and did) lose Game 3 on Monday.
Are any of you still with me? Because I was also going to post about the Star Wars concert.
(I told you this was going to be long!)
My brother, Marc, and I went to Star Wars in Concert a couple of weeks ago. It happened to be the same night as Game 1 of the playoffs against Boston, so we seriously had one eye on the show and one on his Blackberry, watching the score. (The Angels won.)
I bought the tickets for Marc's birthday over the summer, so it was awesome to finally get to go. It's funny hanging out with my brother now that we're adults, because when we were kids, we sort of hated each other.
The show was at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. That's a GREAT place to see a concert. I'm pretty sure there's not a bad seat in the place, and it's not gigantic, so you don't have to feel like you're miles away from the stage.
In the lobby on all four levels of the theater, there were character costumes and models, display cases of weapons and helmets, and even a page of the original score from Phantom Menace in John Williams' very own handwriting.
The concert was narrated by C3P0 himself, Mr. Anthony Daniels:The full orchestra was backed by a full choir and played the music from all 6 films. It was basically in chronological order from the first time Qui-Gon Jinn met Annakin Skywalker, to the moment when the Rebels finally defeated the Galactic Empire. Along with the music, clips from the films were shown on the screen, as well as a laser show and some fancy work with LED lights. Oh yeah. There was also a part where they SHOT FLAMES OUT OF THE STAGE.
I know the tour dates were very limited, but the popularity of this event might mean an extension to other cities. If you get a chance to see Star Wars in Concert, GO. It's amazing and beautiful and worth every penny!
I apologize that this post is so long and crazy, but for anyone that is still reading, May the Force be with you!
I'm off to see U2 this weekend. And watch Game 6, Angels vs. Yankees, tomorrow night. Gonna be a busy weekend!
