TV's My Favorite
Movies. Books. The three-time American League West Division Champions.
I'm a busy girl. Between working full-time, occasionally helping my mom with my grandma--
(Which has been a LOT less frequent in the past few months. Both good and bad.)
--and being all responsible with my Job's Daughters and finally having a calling at church, and trying to write a novel, I have a lot to do.
But I am managing to find time for myself and the things I really enjoy. I've been reading more. And watching movies.
(This weekend I REALLY want to see The Invention of Lying. Looks hilarious!)
One thing I always seem to work into my overly scheduled life is television.
I don't watch nearly as many shows as I used to. Seriously. I used to watch about 4-5 hours of TV every single day of the week.
Now it's more like 4-4 1/2.
Kidding!
Seriously, though, I only watch a handful of shows these days, but they are all awesome. Of course. Because I everything I'm into is awesome.
(Especially the LA Angels, who are going to kick the SNOT out of the Red Sox next week!)
Ahem.
Anyway, I have my tried and true faves like Desperate Housewives, LOST and The Office. And I might have mentioned once, a long time ago, that I really dig Deadliest Catch.
(April is SOOOOOO far away!)
But I thought I'd take a little time today to tell you about a couple of completely awesome shows that you might not be watching yet. Two of them are brand new this season, and two got picked up after very short first seasons last year:
FlashForward. I know I wrote about this show last week, but it is seriously amazing. Two episodes in and I have already found my replacement for when LOST ends in June. As long as people keep tuning in so that this one stays on the air. It's completely mind-blowing. Put it this way. I love the show for reasons more substantial than the hotness of Joseph Fiennes. That's saying a lot. So if you haven't watched it yet, go to abc.com and check out the first two episodes. Then tune in, set your DVR, whatever you have to do. But get hooked on this show because if it gets cancelled, I'm gonna be all kinds of depressed.
Community. When I heard that Joel McHale was getting his own sitcom, I jumped for joy. When I heard it was set at a community college in California, I was sold. Trust me. I work at a community college and there is so much sitcom potential on this campus it's not even funny. Er...uh...I mean, it's downright hilarious! Honestly. Watch this show and you will understand a lot more about me, my job, and the people I
Castle. Nathan Fillion. I needed no other reason to watch this when it started in March. He starred in Firefly and Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog and appeared in Desperate Housewives and LOST. I heart him. And when I heard he was finally in a show that was getting a second season, I was ecstatic. In Castle, he plays bestselling author Richard Castle who was originally brought in to consult with NYPD homicide detectives on a case that was eerily similar to the plot of one of his novels. But when he met Det. Kate Beckett, he decided she was the inspiration for his next major character and got permission to stick around Beckett and some of her fellow officers and now he helps investigate. Think Murder, She Wrote, but if Angela Lansbury talked kind of dirty and played poker with Stephen J. Cannell and James Patterson.
Dollhouse. It was my favorite new show last year and this year it's off to an amazing start. This is a great blend of intrigue, suspense, occasionally some funny, although that doesn't happen often. I'm sure there are other shows this compares to, but it's unlike anything else I can think of right now. It's just awesome and Joss Whedon is a genius and you should just watch it because it's so darned good!
I should also mention Fringe here. It's fascinating and mysterious, too. In a different way from the others. It's a lot more like X-Files and since JJ Abrams is at the helm, it will probably eventually end better. I'm not imploring anyone to watch it, though, because as much as I enjoy it, I think this is one of those that you'll either love or hate. And it's a little hard to get into. You'll really have to go back and watch the first season before you dive in. But if you were a fan of the X-Files, definitely give this a shot!
So there you go. That is Karen's Official Guide to Which New Shows Are Worthy of Your Time and Attention.
Happy viewing!

Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the show list. I don't get to watch much tv, but I'll check these out.
ReplyDeleteI am still LOVING FlashForward.
ReplyDeleteAnd I also watch Fringe and COmmunity. I love, love, love Joel, but I have to say, it's been a little subpar so far.
And I'm disappointed with this season so far, of The Office. It hasn't been funny, and Jim and Pam are becoming unlikeable.
I LOVE the Office. Just started watching Community cause Joel Mchale is hilarious. (and I'm an old lover of Chevy Chase....shhhh)
ReplyDeleteJust started watching Modern Family. It's been my new favorite.
I completely sympathize with your love of TV even though I almost NEVER get to watch it anymore. I don't follow any shows currently on TV, even though I desperately want to. I've heard good things about Community, and might have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info!
OMG we are TV twins! I would like to second all of the above. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat list. I have two episodes of FlashForward and Community on my DVR and am hoping to get to them in the next month or so.
ReplyDeleteI love Psych on USA (which The Mentalist is a complete copy of, just not as funny). Because who doesn't love obscure 80s references.
And, I, um...love Survivor and Amazing Race (cough.) Did I just admit to liking reality TV?
Hi, Karen! Happy SITS Saturday Comment a thon!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree w/ your comment on SITS about reading other's comments. I've found several great blogs and made some strong friendships that way.
I like a lot of the same shows as you, and I totally agree about Fringe, which I love. Gotta go from the start.
Have you tried Heroes? Again, start w/ the DVDs.
Happy Sits Saturday Sharefest! I really enjoyed your comment over @ Sits today..so I just had to come by and say hello.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big TV watcher (when I have time of course)..but I tend to watch a little too much reality T.V. Yeah, I know--it's mostly junk, but for some reason-I get into it. I have to say though, that I watch "The Office" religiously...it's funny, good stuff. Hope your weekend is peachy and good luck to your baseball team :)
I need to check out flash forward. I have heard such good things about.
ReplyDeleteStopping by from SITS!
Love your blog!!
How in the world did I not know Nathan Fillian was in another show. Oh Karen, I can't tell you how much I love Firefly. Captain Tightpants is my fave.
ReplyDeleteSo, thank you!
I don't watch a whole lot of TV although I have been watching certain series on DVD.
ReplyDeletep.s. Thanks for stopping by my blog when I was SITS featured blogger!
I find that when I turn on the tv I get sucked in and end up watching way more than what I intended to watch. I prefer talk radio. I love listening to certain shows on NPR, like this morning I worked on a puzzle while listening to This American LIfe. I also LOVE Wait,Wait, Don't Tell Me. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteWait, wait... how old am I? ONly 35... sheesh... I feel like I just hit 65. My AARP card will be arriving any day now...
I wish I had cable so I could see some of these shows....I make a sacrifice and go over to my brothers to get my DEXTER fix...don't know if he's want me there every night just to watch tv.
ReplyDeleteps...i want to learn about both southern cal and utah (i never thought of utah as a place full of happenin events.) let me know when and you'd be my very first guest poster...and I don't really know what to do, so I need your guidance...
Hi there. Stopping by from SITS. I used to watch a ton of tv. Have recently cut down to my tried and true as well. Like you, I love the Office, although I agree with Kristina P. that the Office has not been very likeable this season. I stopped watching Heroes, it got too silly and I am a huge fan of the Food Network.
ReplyDeleteMan, I need to get on Flash Forward asap! I keep hearing good things about it and I need something to fill the void Lost will leave next year.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I think it's wonderful that you're taking time out to do the things you love instead of getting caught in the day to day/work (like me)!
ReplyDeleteI dig on Castle, too. Has the new season started yet? I don't watch much tv, so I don't know if new episodes are back on.
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing such good things about Flash Forward--I'll have to watch it!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Castle. LOVE it. And Fringe. And the Office.
But my favourite show this year is Glee. Hands down.
Visiting from SITS!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100% I love all those shows, except for the fact I haven't seen Community yet. But it is on hulu, so I'm sure I'll get around to it soon. Finally, someone else out there with great TV taste!
