The "News"
I know quite a few of you out there love celeb gossip, and I'll admit that I do visit the rumor mill on occasion. What can I say? It's fun to read about what two stars just got together and who's having a baby and which favorite actor just had a meltdown on the set of his latest movie. I'm not here to rant about the evils of Us Weekly and the National Enquirer and TMZ.
But.
I have had it with the news. Or, rather, the "news."
Last night, I had a hard time drifting off to sleep and turned on the television, as I often do. It was time for the nightly news programs on a few stations, and their TOP STORY was the CANCELED news conference that was supposed to be given by Tiger Woods' supposed mistress. I turned the channel to the Jay Leno Show, hoping a bit of comedy would lull me into sleep. EVERY joke in his opening monologue (for as long as I could stand to listen) was about Tiger Woods and his escapades.
I switched over to the second hour of Private Practice (a show I haven't watched in over a year because it's kind of lame) and got sucked into that story before I knew what had happened. The show ended and the local news started up with the Breaking News about two bodies that were found in a house in the next county. And then the newcaster literally said, "We'll get back to more on that story in a minute, but first, Tiger Woods [blah blah blah]."
Seriously?
If those bodies hadn't been found in that house in Diamond Bar, the lead off story was going to be about Tiger Woods?
The President is sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.
Deliberations began in Italy in the trial of Amanda Knox, an American student who has been accused of murdering her roommate.
Some of the science has apparently been
But no. The top story, the most important news of the day was that Rachel Uchitel canceled a press conference in which she was expected to discuss a possible affair with Tiger Woods.
I'm not saying the tale isn't interesting. When I heard about the car accident and the mixed reports over whether his injuries were serious or minor, I was concerned. I like Tiger. He's a great golfer and probably a big part of the reason I enjoy the game. And the idea of his wife chasing him out of the house with a golf club because he cheated is a bit fascinating and takes him down a notch or two in my esteem, just like Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant and LeAnn Rimes.
But even if I think his affairs and behavior are any of my business, why are they the top story on the news? On EVERY channel and EVERY radio station?
