I know quite a few of you out there love celeb gossip, and I'll admit that I do visit the rumor mill on occasion. What can I say? It's fun to read about what two stars just got together and who's having a baby and which favorite actor just had a meltdown on the set of his latest movie. I'm not here to rant about the evils of Us Weekly and the National Enquirer and TMZ.
But.
I have had it with the news. Or, rather, the "news."
Last night, I had a hard time drifting off to sleep and turned on the television, as I often do. It was time for the nightly news programs on a few stations, and their TOP STORY was the CANCELED news conference that was supposed to be given by Tiger Woods' supposed mistress. I turned the channel to the Jay Leno Show, hoping a bit of comedy would lull me into sleep. EVERY joke in his opening monologue (for as long as I could stand to listen) was about Tiger Woods and his escapades.
I switched over to the second hour of Private Practice (a show I haven't watched in over a year because it's kind of lame) and got sucked into that story before I knew what had happened. The show ended and the local news started up with the Breaking News about two bodies that were found in a house in the next county. And then the newcaster literally said, "We'll get back to more on that story in a minute, but first, Tiger Woods [blah blah blah]."
Seriously?
If those bodies hadn't been found in that house in Diamond Bar, the lead off story was going to be about Tiger Woods?
The President is sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.
Deliberations began in Italy in the trial of Amanda Knox, an American student who has been accused of murdering her roommate.
Some of the science has apparently been
But no. The top story, the most important news of the day was that Rachel Uchitel canceled a press conference in which she was expected to discuss a possible affair with Tiger Woods.
I'm not saying the tale isn't interesting. When I heard about the car accident and the mixed reports over whether his injuries were serious or minor, I was concerned. I like Tiger. He's a great golfer and probably a big part of the reason I enjoy the game. And the idea of his wife chasing him out of the house with a golf club because he cheated is a bit fascinating and takes him down a notch or two in my esteem, just like Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant and LeAnn Rimes.
But even if I think his affairs and behavior are any of my business, why are they the top story on the news? On EVERY channel and EVERY radio station?

I believe this is a case of The Wizard of Oz.
They keep you looking over here --------> so you don't see what's over thee <--------.
Could not agree more with you....it's sad, actually, isn't it?
I totally agree with you. It is really none of our business.
I agree. I'm sick of it too.
You actually think the news is going to report the global warming hoax?!!? I don't even watch the news and I'm tired of hearing about Tiger too! The worlds obsession with celebrities has gone overboard yet again. I just wish they were still talented people that we admired for their talent and not their messed up lives...but, this will make his biography books better sales now!
I like the comment lifeissweet16 made about the Tiger Woods stories distracting viewers from the real issues. I don't know if that's really the case, but it's an interesting theory.
I couldn't care less about Tiger Woods. I care about golf about as much as I care about Nascar. Which is to say, not at all.
As you know, I am the queen of celebrity gossip love. I have a subscription to US Weekly and still buy copies of other celebrity trash. I went to LA purely to try to catch a glimpse of a celeb. I got my picture taken in front of The Ivy like a big huge nerd, for goodness sakes. And I am SO sick of the Tiger stories. It's obvious what happened now...let's move on!
I agree, I couldn't believe they kept going on about it on the NBC Nightly News. I was puzzled too because the story wasn't making sense to me at first or why they would cover it so darn much and then they just kept running the story into the ground with more details here and there....or maybe it didn't make sense because I didn't care that he'd had a "minor" accident or whatever.
Anyway, I totally agree with you!
I agree.... wholeheartedly, I really do! But, if you'll forgive me, I must google this girl's name and look for a picture. 'Enquiring' minds, you know! : )
Our country has mixed up priorities. Probably why the terrorists hate us. ;)
How is this story any different from the seemingly hundreds of other athletes/celebs who have cheated? Whose enormous egos are never satisfied with the love of their wives? It is a sad, cautionary tale we women hear much too often and it screams to us that we will never be enough. You're right, it's time to turn it off.
I agree! This is getting just ridiculous. I keep trying to pay attention to the more important things, but with my limited time, I wish the news wouldn't make it so hard to find.
It is annoying. I never understand why some entertainment stories get so oversaturated to the point of obscuring what's important.
Chasing him with a gold club makes her my hero, wish I'd thought of it...but it is not "news" and should only be on ET, not the nightly news!
I bought US Weekly and People today. I am contributing to the problem. And I'm OK with that.
I'm with everyone else, tired of it. I,m like what Jannee asked, I want more information on the global warming hoax that was contributed by a scientist and pushed down our throats by the "news" media, entertainment people, oh wait, the "news" media is classified as entertainment now. So sorry for the confusion!
Amen sister!
I can NOT agree with you more. It seriously makes me furious that whenever a celebrity, or politician has a personal 'trial or tribulation' or failure or whatever you want to call it,,, that the media just hawks on it over and over again.
If normal people are forced to move on in their daily lives and trials why must people in the limelight be forced to live it through every day. No wonder child-stars are so messed up, how do you learn to cope when your mistakes will forever be posted on TMZ or the soup!?
I feel like news in general is so negative and so abrasive that its often hard to bear and its really disturbing when you learn more about the world from Oprah or John Stewart then the actual news. pretty messed up!
Happy Sits Share day!I'm glad I found you via SITS I plan on following you and your thoughts... feel free to check out my blog and follow if you feel so inclined;)
Danielle
I'm sick of it too but I was so worked up about it this morning I ended up blogging about it!
This is exactly why I spend every Friday on my blog doing RanDumb...my post about stupid news because it all sorta falls into that category anyway and the only "news" I can tolerate is the sort that's unintentionally hilarious. Stopped over from SITS to say hello:)
I'm so tired of hearing about the whole thing. At this point, they have me convinced that he's a cheating slime...but let it go at that. This should not be news.
Though, I do have to admit that when one of his fellow golfers said something to the effect of "Maybe he shouldn't listen to Nike and 'just do it,'" I did get a good giggle.
I so very much agree with you. Give me a break...the top news?
I love celebrity gossip, but hearing about Tiger got old quick.
The Amanda Knox story is messed up. I've been following it for a while. I personally think she's guilty or involved in some negative way.
No, Joey. You know the terrorists hate us because you didn't own a waffle iron. Stop trying to place blame elsewhere.
I AGREE I AGREE I AGREE I AGREE!!!
I stopped watching the news and am way less informed and way more happy.
