Confession Wednesday: Birthday Confessions!

Confession Wednesday Button
Ah, birthdays.

Some love them. Some hate them.

I happen to love them. My own birthday is my favorite.

(Well, besides Jesus's, of course.)

I love spending the day with friends and family. I love special birthday dinners and presents and cake. I absolutely LOVE cake.

(My fave is spice cake with cream cheese frosting. Just sayin'.)

One year, I baked my own birthday cake.

This is NOT the actual cake I baked.

While living in Utah, I had a core group of friends. There were four of us that hung out together almost constantly. There were Emily and Dustin--

(who pretty much went straight from two years of friendship to engaged in, like, four seconds flat)

--and Ashley.

(The three of them had taken to calling me by the nickname Wiener.)

(Why? Not telling.)

(Not out of embarrassment. It's actually because the truth is far less interesting than whatever reasons you're crafting in your pretty/naughty/crazy little heads.)

Anyways.

My birthday was fast approaching. And, as part of the Best Birthday Present Ever, the Academy had chosen to broadcast the Oscars ON my birthday that year.

Because I LOVE to watch the Oscars, and I especially LOVE to watch with company, I invited my friends over to the apartment where I lived all alone. The plan was to have some dinner, watch the Oscars, have a little birthday cake, and basically just enjoy a fun evening.

Ashley volunteered to bring the birthday cake.

And then she mentioned that she had seen some really cute cupcakes at the supermarket bakery.

There are two things in the world of desserts wherein I am NOT a fan:

supermarket bakery cakes
cupcakes in nearly ANY form

"That's okay," I told her. "I actually want to make my own cake."

She tried to insist, but I was more stubborn than she. Which, if you knew her, you'd know that's really saying something.

(If you're reading this, Ash, you totally know it's true! )

So, I made my own birthday cake. A deliciously fabulous spice cake with cream cheese frosting. It was two layers of gooey, cream cheesey goodness.

It was the best birthday cake since my mom made me a Barbie cake for my (7th?) (8th?) birthday party.

But Ashley was disappointed. She'd been playing a surprise. One that did not include cupcakes like she'd said.

Instead, she'd been planning to bring my favorite cake, with the message "Happy Birthday Wiener" scrawled across the top.

Thinking herself hilarious and clever, she was sorely disappointed to miss out on presenting that particular gag. I think she was probably just as sad not to see my reaction as she was to miss seeing the look from whatever unwitting employee happened to be working at the bakery counter that day.

I pretended to feel guilty about spoiling the surprise.

But dang, I loved my cake.

Do you have one kid whose birthday you seem to forget EVERY year? Have you ever secretly longed for a surprise party, or thrown one that was just awesome? Do you hate birthday cake?

  2. I'm definitley going to get the Worse Mother in the World Award after I 'fess up here. Oh well. After about the age of 10 I really began to resent having to throw birthday parties for my girls every. single. year. I only have two kids, but it just felt like a burden and a pain. When I was a kid, you didn't get a party every year. I remember having 2 parties. But when my girls were little it was so fun to plan parties for them, but then I got tired of it and it seemed unnecessary. This year the 17 year old didn't want a party (whoohoo), instead she went out to dinner with friends. I guess that means I only have to throw one more party for the younger girl. If her sister didn't get a party at 17, I won't have to give her one either. OK, I'll take that Award now.

  3. I hope you have a very wonderful birthday!!!

can I ask why you don't like cupcakes? I'm just curious how they are different from cake. :-)

  4. Love it, Karen! I actually like variety for my birthday "cakes." One year my hubby bought a gourmet pie. Last year he bought gourmet cupcakes. Yes cupcakes! And each year it varies, which is exactly what I love! :-)

  5. Happy Birthday!

My only birthday cake issue is that I HATE ice cream cake, the problem is my father hates real cake, but loves ice cream cake. So every year on my birthday, we had, you guessed it, ice cream cake. It's completely messed up. Great thing about being a grown up? I don't have to eat ice cream cake on my birthday.

  7. I'm not big on cake...but that photo makes me rethink my dislike for the pastery. Don't care much for cupcakes either...but I do eat both. I just want the ice cream. :)

Are you making cake this year?

  9. Well, when my two oldest kiddos were young, I used to make these amazing cakes, and throw super duper parties. Then my two younger kiddos came along and I was kinda burned out by the time the youngest was about 6. So, they've missed out - they don't get homemade cakes most of the time, just stupid yucky store-bought cakes. Come to think of it, my burn-out coincided with me going back to work and never having time for ANYTHING. So, maybe now that I'm home again, I can be serious about birthdays. I get to practice soon - my hubby is turning 47 in 2 days, my 12 year old is turning 13 in 7 days, and then two more birthdays in April and May. Woohoo! And, yes, I've forgotten birthdays. My husband's. (He never lets me forget it). And my 19 year old, whose birthday falls right in the middle of stupid things like ACT testing and finals every year, so we put off the celebration for awhile... and then never remember to finally celebrate. Poor kid. :-(

Here's to a year full of fun birthdays - I pledge to make the cakes, do the whole celebration/party thing, and not forget a single one.

  13. I LOVE my birthday. And I've always wanted a surprise party. So this year, I threw my husband, the man who would never want a surprise party, a suprise bash. My best friend said that the reason I threw it was because I wanted to hear everyone yell, "Surprise" when I walked in, even if it wasn't for me. And you know what? She was right. :)

  14. Um, I think I would ANYTHING with cream cheese frosting on it.

I think my birthday was easily the most forgotten in the house because it's . . . (drumroll please) . . . Christmas Eve. But it's made me never forget other people's birthdays, so there's a plus.

And actually, I really like having a Christmas Eve birthday now.

  15. That cake does look incredible, even if it isn't your actual cake. I'm just gonna pretend it is.

I can't think of any good birthday confessions, except that I want my birthday to be a BIG deal always. MY day, everything MY way.

  18. I hate surprise parties because everyone feels obligated to ignore the birthday girl all day long so the surprise party will really be a surprise. So then said birthday girl has a crappy day all day long on her special day!! (no, this hasn't happened to me on my birthday, but i've been a real grump about other surprises....)

If you're gonna do a surprise party, make a huge deal out of her birthday, too...so she doesn't spend all day feeling depressed. I promise, she'll love the EXTRA love even more :)

  19. I remember the whole cupcake fiasco. You were totally stubborn.

We need to get the entire clan back together one of these days. :) Maybe you can hit up "the falls" for Oscar night!
