Morning Person

After breaking the news yesterday that I was awake and headed to the gym at the startlingly early hour of Before God Wakes Up, there was an interesting mix of comments.

Most were very encouraging.

Some made me laugh out loud.

A few questioned my sanity.

I know. 4am is very early. And, of course, in order to get to the gym by 4am, I have to set the alarm for a time that begins with a 3.

The fact is, I've always been a morning person. At least, for as long as I can remember.

(I'm sure this is news to my mother, who regularly struggled to get me out of bed in time for school when I was young.)

But on Saturday mornings? I wasn't really inclined to sleep until noon. I wasn't a kid that slept a lot, and usually only slept until 10 if I'd been up past 2.

Most of my friends are Night Owls. And so, I've sort of learned to become a Night Owl. But the truth is that I'm fairly worthless after 9 at night. My brain shuts off and my ability to focus on anything is severely limited.

Yes, there is the rare occasion when I can force myself to start watching a 3-hour-long movie at 10:30 on a Saturday night after a less-than-stellar first date, but for the most part? I embrace the "early to bed, early to rise" philosophy.

What's so great about early mornings?

I LOVE how few people are awake at that hour.

Here it is, 5:40am--

(I am SO going to be late for work!)

--and things are quiet. My roommates are asleep. The neighbors are asleep. No cars are passing below my window. Right now, it's just me and my thoughts.

It's so peaceful.

Definitely my preferred method of getting ready to start the day.

I hate those mornings when I jump out of bed, realizing I'm terribly late, running around, hitting my head on the shower door, stubbing my toe on a mislaid shoe, all because I waited to the last minute to turn off the snooze button.

Nope. I'd much rather give myself some time. Enjoy the quiet. And watch the sky slowly turn from black to purple to green to blue.

I love mornings.

What about you? Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Oh, and because my birthday is later this week, tomorrow's Confession Wednesday topic is Birthday Confessions!

  1. I used to be a night owl until about 5 years ago. I had a job that I had to be at by 7:00 which means I had to get up really early for commute time, time to shower, etc. and time to wake up.

I have struggled to stay up past 10watching the Olympics! I agree about the early morning being so nice and quiet.
    :-)

    Happy Early Birthday!!!

  3. I got up at 7:30 this morning, and am angry. I couldn't go back to sleep. I usually go to bed at midnight and sleep until 9 am.

  4. Ummm... I might have been one of those people who called you crazy. I promise I wasn't questioning your sanity. I'm just soooo not a morning person. So, for me, 4 am is the middle of the night. That being said, I'm not a night owl either. I'm asleep by 11:00 pm at the latest. I suppose I'm a midday person, but then again, if given the opportunity I love an afternoon nap. I guess I'm really just Sleeping Beauty. Or Rumpelstiltskin. Yeah, probably him.

  5. I'm an early riser by necessity. My job requires me to be there at 6:30 am, so I have to get up for that. But I'm usually a night owl, because it's so nice to have time after the kids are tucked in bed to relax.

  6. I am a night owl, and one of the things I love about is what you love about getting up early. Everything seems much more peaceful as everyone else has already gone off to bed.

  11. I am definitely a night owl.

At 4 am, I usually go to bed. I wake up at 8:30 or so. I try to sleep for 1 hour or 2 during the day (afternoons), and I wake up with so much energy, that it feels like a new day has started again.

  12. Ehh morning. The only time I am a morning person is when I haven't adjusted to time change!

  13. I'm totally a morning person...always have been. I'm like you...I don't want to have to scramble like a mad woman upon waking up. I like to take my time and enjoy the quiet (although it's rarely quiet here in our house after 6:00 am).

And same thing as you...9:00 pm comes around and I'm completely useless. Although I can force myself to stay awake, like if I'm catching up on writing blog posts or reading/commenting on other blogs.

Tim is a total night owl...so we're pretty much two ships that pass in the night briefly.

  14. I am a morning person, I love the freshness of a new day, not the stale tiredness of the night

  15. I'm a morning person, too. I have to get up at 4:45 am every day for work, nad hate it if I sleep past 8 on the weekends. I, too, like being up when others are still snoozing. If I oversleep then I feel like I've missed half the day!

Can't wait to hear your bday story! Happy early birthday to you!

  16. I used to be able to stay up till 4am then get up and by to work by 9am when I was single. When I got married things changed. Aaron is a total night owl and I try desperately to stay up with him but usually want to fall asleep by 10:30 or 11. I think I could be a morning person but still get mad if I wake up before 8am:-) So I guess I'm a mid day person too.

  17. I never thought I'd enjoy early mornings but 2 kids later and I quite love the magical silence that an early morning brings :)

However, getting up at 3am to be at the gym for 4am is C-R-A-Z-Y. I thought I was nuts getting up at 5am to be at the gym for opening at 5:30am. My god, what gym do you go to??

    Thanks for visiting my blog!

  18. Oof. Put me in the category of thinking you're CRAZY, but GOOD for you!!!

  19. Definitely a night owl, and yet it's for many of the same reasons you like mornings: Alone time, quiet house, time to organize my thoughts. But for me, night time is when I process the day, like a computer compiling after a long session of programming. (I read Dilbert, so I can make references like that and sound crazy smart.)

I also get an amazing burst of energy around 9 p.m. Once, I started painting the guest room at 9:00, and my husband had to come in and remind me that paint fumes are not conducive to sleeping. Wimp.

  20. Happy early birthday!!!

I am like you...worthless at night but up and at 'em in the morning. I actually prefer late nights to early mornings but because of all this time getting up early for work, my body's clock has set itself to be morning-oriented.

  21. I used to be such a morning person! My mom said when I was a baby I'd wake the whole house up by 6:00am! But now I don't have to work until 9 am and I try really hard to get to bed before midnight, but it doesn't always happen. Now I set my alarm for 6:30 and snooze until 7! :)

  23. I am sooooo not a morning person. Not even a little bit. My boyfriend wakes up bright and early and sings crazy songs in the shower. I just want to smack him.

It's best not to talk to me until about noon.

  24. Neither. I'm a sleepy girl. I get up around 7:30 and have lights out by 10:25. I know, party animal!

  25. If I had to wake up in the 3's I'd just not go to sleep - you are crazy!

And I'm not necessarily a morning or a night person - I just need eight hours of solid sleep at some point and I am good.

  29. I was always so self-conscious when I woke up way too late and you had already gotten up, showered, dressed and ran a marathon. Ah, the good ol' days of being rommates! :)

  30. I'm not a morning person. I'm not a total night owl either though. I think there's something wrong with me. I just want to sleep.
