Oscar Night Play-by-Play

It's Oscar Night! On with the show!

5:30--It's starting! It's starting! Why are all the Actor/Actress nominees out on stage? That's weird.

5:31--Oh. And now their dates and going onstage to get them. This is kind of lame.

5:32--NEIL PATRICK HARRIS!!! Wahoo! I heart him. And he's singing. {SWOON} I hope there's a really good reason they didn't get him to host. Haha! He just made a funny joke about firing his agent since he's not hosting. Oh, Neil.

5:34--Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin are coming down to the stage. This better be good...

5:36--I'm kind of not loving these two...

5:37--Okay, they're growing on me. Best quote so far: Steve Martin--"Gabourey and I have something in common. In both our first movies, we were born a poor black child."

5:40--The old school 3D glasses were pretty funny. As are the floating wood sprite thingies.

5:41--There's something wrong with George Clooney. I hope he's okay. He hasn't smiled once since the show started.

5:44--Penelope Cruz is the first presenter. Best Supporting Actor.

5:48--And the Oscar goes to: Christophe Waltz! I'm 1/1 so far.

5:49--That was a great speech. I'm so glad he won. It's kind of cute that his hands are shaking.

5:50--Ryan Reynolds! Love him! Presenting Best Picture Nominee The Blind Side. I think I'm going to have to buy that when it comes out on DVD. The only thing that would have made it better is if Ryan Reynolds was in it.

5:52--Commercial Break.

5:55--Cameron Diaz and Steve Carrell presenting...I thought Steve would be presenting with Tina Fey.

Okay, we just had to pause it so my times are going to be off the rest of the night. Oh well! C'est la vie!

6:01--Cameron really looks gorgeous. I love her dress. And her hair. And her makeup. She's beautiful.

6:02--The "interviews" with the animated characters are pretty funny. I'm digging this.

6:03--Best Animated Feature Film: Up! YES!! Definitely deserved to win! I'm 2/2...

6:04--Pete Docter, Up's Director looks like someone stretched out his head.

6:05--Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are back...Their "Hangover" joke was kinda lame, but whatevs.

6:06--Miley Cyrus and Amanda Seyfried are here to present Best Original Song. Miley really needs to stand up straight. Doesn't her mom tell her not to slouch? Oh, wait...Her mom doesn't tell her not to do anything, does she?

6:08--Colin Farrell was in Crazy Heart? I really should see that movie...

6:09--And the Oscar goes to: Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett for "The Weary Kind"! I'm 3 for 3...

6:10--Chris Pine is presenting Best Picture Nominee District 9.

6:12--Alec Baldwin is flying solo now, announcing Tina Fey and Robert Downey, Jr. And Alec's totally right. He does owe his recent success to Tina Fey.

6:13--Tina and Robert are presenting the Best Original Screenplay. These two are hilarious! They should take this show on the road. They're doing an Actors vs Writers bit that's awesome.

6:15--And the Oscar goes to: Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker!! Totally deserved that. And he gave a great speech. It's sad that his dad didn't get to live long enough to see this. 4/4.

6:17--Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick??? That's AWESOME! Total 80s flashback. They're talking about John Hughes. This is such a great tribute.

6:19--"Those aren't pillows!" I love Planes, Trains and Automobiles...

6:22--Stars from some of John's movies. Not exactly sure why, but it's kind of cool. Ducky! Judd Nelson looks weird. Macaulay needs a haircut. That's cool that his family is here. His son, John III looks just like him.

6:24--Samuel L. Jackson is presenting Best Picture Nominee: Up. I really need to buy this one. I love it so much.

6:25--Commercial Break.

We're caught up to live now, so my times should be right again. Not that anyone besides me cares...

6:27--Steve and Alec are back to introduce Carey Mulligan and Zoe Saldat.

6:28--Both of their dresses are really ugly.

6:29--Cool video montage about how short films can help bolster your cred as a filmmaker.

6:31--Best Animated Short: Logorama. WTF? I can't believe something beat Wallace and Grommit.

6:33--Best Documentary Short: Music by Prudence. Yeah, I suck at picking short film winners.

6:35--So this lady just randomly--and VERY rudely--just interrupted the filmmaker right in the middle of his speech. That was completely awful. They should take away her Oscar and tow her car.

6:36--Best Live Action Short: The New Tenants. Very nice acceptance speech and no rude interruptions.

6:38--Ben Stiller as a Navi! Hilarious! I don't know what he's here for, but it's pretty funny.

6:39--James Cameron looks disturbed by this. Ooh, good! He finally laughed!

6:40--Oh, he's presenting Best Makeup. It all makes sense now.

6:41--And the winner is: Okay, random fishing pole messing with Ben's fake tail. Funny but disturbing. And the winner is STAR TREK!! Yes! 5/8.

6:43--Jeff Bridges is presenting Best Picture Nominee--A Serious Man. I haven't seen this one, but the more I see about it, the more I kind of want to. Guess I'll add that to my list.

6:47--Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams are presenting together. Best Adapted Screenplay.

6:50--And the winner is Geoffrey Fletcher, Precious. I'm sure it's well-written, but I just...uh...I just don't know how someone writes something so dark. The places your mind has to go. No thanks!

6:52--Steve Martin took credit for writing Fletcher's speech. Funny! And he's introducing...Queen Latifah!
6:53--She presents the Governor's Awards honorees.

6:55--Robin Williams makes a joke about balls. Why are those jokes always funny? I swear I'm part 12-year-old boy.

6:56--He's presenting Best Supporting Actress.

6:59--And the winner is Mo'Nique. The clip they showed for her sealed the deal. I cannot watch Precious. But she looked amazing and I congratulate her performance. Plus, that dress looks KILLER on her.

7:00--"Sometimes you have to forgo what's popular to do what's right." True story, Mo'Nique. 6/10.

7:01--Colin Firth. Love him! Presenting Best Picture Nominee: An Education. This one is on my Netflix saved list. Want to see it.

7:05--Sigourney Weaver always wears the right color. Presenting Best Art Direction.

7:07--And the winner is: Avatar! That was a tough one to call. 7/11.

7:08--Such a touching speech by one of the winners. He says 13 years ago he was told he wasn't going to live.

7:09--Presenting Best Costume Design: Tom Ford and Sarah Jessica Parker.

7:10--And the winner is: The Young Victoria. 8/12.

7:11--I think Sandy Powell's dress is kind of cool. My brother says if I am using "cool" to mean "ugly" then he agrees with me.

7:12--Charlize Theron is presenting Best Picture Nominee: Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. (That title seriously annoys me. It's so pretentious.) And they keep saying it's uplifting, but there's nothing about that movie that looks uplifting to me.

7:16--Alec and Steve thank the musical people. Because they seriously do a great job of keeping the show going.

7:17--Okay, this video of Alec and Steve in their hotel room last night made me cry from laughing. Hopefully it'll be on YouTube by the time I publish this post.

7:18--Taylor Lautner! and Kristin Stewart...Tribute to Horror Films. For someone who claims to hate scary movies, I've seen and loved a good many of these.

7:21--Did they just call Twilight a horror movie? The only thing scary about that movie was how bad the acting was.

7:22--Zac Effon and Anna Kendrick are here to present Sound Editing.

7:23--Love this video bit narrated by Morgan Freeman. He's got a great voice for narrating. Cool way to explain the importance of Sound Editing and Sound Mixing using The Dark Knight as an example.

7:25--And the winner is: The Hurt Locker!

7:26--Sound Mixing.

7:27--And the winner is: The Hurt Locker!

7:28--My brother wants to know why they're playing ET music for Elizabeth Banks. It's because she's doing the Sci Tech awards.

7:29--John Travolta is presenting Best Picture Nominee: Inglourious Basterds. I am really going to have to think about watching this movie again. Because it looks so great in clips, but it bored me. Was I just not in the mood for it?

7:34--Steve Martin is back to present Sandra Bullock.

7:35--She's here to present Cinematography. "Job 1: Make me look good."

7:36--And the winner is: Mauro Fiore, Avatar! I'm okay with getting that wrong since I thought this is who SHOULD win anyway.

7:37--Was he just speaking in Portuguese? It sounded cool.

7:38--Ooh, Demi Moore is doing the In Memorium. I always cry at this part. And every year I recognize more of the names.  James Taylor is singing. Very nice tribute. As usual.

7:45--Jennifer Lopez and Sam Worthington. He's pretty. She's...well, okay, fine. She's pretty, too. I just really don't love her. They're presenting Best Original Score.

7:46--They're representing the nominated scores with a dance number. This looks really awesome.

7:50--My 4yo nephew just heard the music from Up and knew right away what it was. I hope it wins. But damn. That Avatar segment was fantastic.

7:52--YES! Michael Giacchino wins for Up! My nephew is bouncing and just said, "Yesssssss!"

7:53--That was a great speech about not letting anyone tell you pursuing your dreams is a waste of time. I hope he gives JJ Abrams a big hug after this.
7:54--EYE CANDY. Gerard Butler and Bradley Cooper on the screen at the same time! Presenting Visual Effects. How fitting since they are both so visually effective.

7:55--And the winner is Avatar. There's really no way it couldn't win. That movie has taken visual effects in an entire new direction.

7:57--Jason Bateman is presenting Best Picture Nominee: Up in the Air. That was a really good movie. I should watch it again.

7:58--Ryan Reynolds is sitting right behind George Clooney. More prettiness. Why isn't George smiling??

8:01--Alec introduces Matt Damon, who's presenting Documentary Feature.

8:02--Sorry. I'm distracted because my nephew just started talking about Rosa Parks and how she sat in the front of the bus. Did I mention he's 4?

8:04--And the winner is The Cove. Nothing can compete with the plight of animals. It's just how it is.

8:06--Tyler Perry is making jokes about close ups, but the cameraman isn't cooperating so it's kind of falling flat. Oh, here we go. Alec and Steve are hanging out in Snuggies!

8:07--Best Film Editing: The Hurt Locker!

8:08--It finally hit me who Kathryn Bigelow looks like. Jillian Michaels.

8:09--Keanu Reeves is here to present Best Picture Nominee: The Hurt Locker. I am seriously pulling for this movie. My whole opinion of tonight changed after I saw that yesterday.

8:14--Pedro and Quentin are Alec and Steve's pet names for each other. How cute.

8:15--Pedro Almodovar  and Quentin Tarrantino are doing the Best Foreign Film award.

8:17--Wow! Argentina kicks France's butt. El secreto de sus ojos!

8:18--If it's Best Foreign Language Film, why can't it be from this country?

8:19--Kathy Bates looks very nice and is presenting Best Picture Nominee: Avatar.

8:24--Montage of Best Actor nominees. There are like 5 presenters for this award, I guess. And I don't know what any of them have to do with each other.

8:25--Oh, I guess these are all people that have worked with the nominees. Interesting.
  • Michelle Pfeiffer: Jeff Bridges
  • Vera Farmiga: George Clooney...Oh my gosh...Is he...smiling? Almost.
  • Julianne Moore: Colin Firth...I feel like watching Pride and Prejudice
  • Tim Robbins: Morgan Freeman..."I'll never forget what you said to me about friendship on the last day of shooting. He said, 'Being a friend means getting each other a cup of coffee. Can you do that for me, Ted?'"
  • Colin Ferrell: Jeremy Renner.."Before the rumors start, all it was was spooning." LOL
8:32--Kate Winslet looks amazing. I have a girl crush on her. She is always so fabulous.

8:33--And the Oscar goes to: Jeff Bridges.

8:34--It's cool to see how excited Jeff Bridges is. I think he's about to cry! Now he's gonna make ME cry. He's talking about his dad. It's really sweet.

8:36--Time limit? What's that? Jeff's still going. But you know what? I say let him have his moment. Oh, there's the music.

8:40--Yay! Best actress montage!

8:41--Okay, and the presenters are:
  • Forrest Whitaker: Sandra Bullock..He's lost a lot of weight. He looks good.
  • Michael Sheen: Helen Mirren...They were good together in The Queen.
  • Peter Skarsgaard: Carey Mulligan..Not sure how I feel about his shaved head. Or hers. Oh, wait. She's just blonde now.
  • Oprah: Gabourey Sidibe...I hear Oprah wanted to be Gabourey's date tonight and Gabourey turned her down. That makes me almost want her to win.
  • Stanley Tucci: Meryl Streep..Perfect choice! They are so great together. Haha! He says, "I have spearheaded a movement among the Academy to cap the number of nominations to 16 so that after tonight, no one will ever have to stand up here again and say, 'Meryl Streep is the best.'"

8:48--Sean Penn makes me throw up in my mouth.

8:49--Sandra Bullock!! I love her. And I am SO happy for her. Even though I really think Meryl should have won. "Did I really win this or did I just wear you all down?"

8:52--Sandy is giving a great speech about her mom. Love her.

8:53--Barbra Streisand makes me throw up in my mouth, too.

8:54--Seriously. Why is SHE presenting Best Director?

8:55--KATHRYN BIGELOW!! What sucks is that everyone is going to make a big deal that she's the first woman. She didn't win because she's a woman. She won because she made an effing AWESOME movie!

8:57--I still think she looks a little like Jillian Michaels.

8:58--What a GREAT acceptance speech. She's awesome. I'm really happy for her!

8:59--THE HURT LOCKER WINS BEST PICTURE!!!

9:00--Great speeches from Mark Boal, that other guy, and Kathryn Bigelow. Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Geraghty are cracking me up in the background. It's cute how excited they are.

9:03--And the show's over, folks.

I am not really sure how I felt about the combined efforts of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. It seemed really unnecessary to have two hosts, but I guess it worked out okay. I am still partial to Hugh Jackman who was the best host since Billy Crystal. Overall, though, I'd say it was a good show. And I am very pleased with the results.

And, after I changed my Best Picture prediction this morning, I got 18/23 for an average of: 78%. I guess I really need to start watching short films...

I hope you all had fun. I know I did. It's a challenge doing a play-by-play for a 3 1/2 hour show, especially with my nephew cracking me up every five seconds, but it was a good night!

  1. I thought the whole presentation was kind of weird. Wasn't quite as polished as years past.

I TOTALLY thought the same thing about playing the ET music. I got a total kick about how they showed a picture of the people who won at the Sci awards. So hilarious. Dustin said "they're too geeky to be seen in person."

I didn't really understand what Sean Penn meant when he was presenting. A bash at the academy? Explain, oh wise Karen. :)

I thought the "in memory" segment was poorly done.

Overall, the show was too predictable to truly enjoy. :)

  2. Say what you will about this years show, the Academy got it right by snubbing 'Avatar' for every award they didn't deserve except for the visual awards which they did deserve (mostly). The critics that have been raving about this joke of a movie are nothing more than sheeple too afraid to call it what it is: a bad movie.

Oh and my 'wtf' moment came from seeing Michael Jackson put in the video tribute.

  3. You're so lucky that you're west coast. I can't make it through the show over here!

George Clooney...what WAS up with that scowl?

  4. Excellent post Karen!!! I thought Steve and Alec were just ok, there was a lot of awkwardness.

I thought George Clooney was being pissy and no idea why. He's such a jokey, charming guy all the time that his behavior was really odd and pretty rude.

  5. I guess I'm the only one who dug the hosts. I thought they did a great job.

And I'm with you on the whole Precious thing. There's no way I could watch it.

  6. This was fun! Who needs to watch an award show when I can read it play by play? Just as entertaining.

    My favorite line you said...
7:54--EYE CANDY. Gerard Butler and Bradley Cooper on the screen at the same time! Presenting Visual Effects. How fitting since they are both so visually effective.

    Amen!

  7. Thank you so much for this recap. We went to sleep early so I missed the last parts. Wow, Hurt Locker won and Sandra Bullock? I'm surprised about those two.

Oh man, I am so crushing on Ryan Reynolds. Did you see him in Blade? YUMMY.

  8. I hate Sean Penn. He's the reason I didn't see Milk.

And I was pleasantly surprised with Steve and Alec. They were funnier than I thought they would be.

  9. I was so happy for Sandra too! She so deserved that Oscar.

  10. My son recognized the song from Up too. I was shocked.

    The Hangover joke was lame.

  11. I feel the same way as you about Precious (or whatever that crazy long official title was). I know Ellen and Oprah and everyone else go on about how fabulous it is, but I just don't see how it could be anything but disturbing, and I can't make myself watch it.

Thanks for the play by play!

  12. How did you get in my head last night? You are amazing. And seriously. What WAS up with George Clooney? He acted weird all night! I posted about the Oscars today too...I figured you'd be proud. ;)

  13. I only watched the first half hour or so, but I think I can still hear Alec Baldwin clapping. I love him so much on 30 Rock, but I couldn't take it last night!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I CAN'T STAND Alec Baldwin. And he made me hate him even more when he started talked in the beginning with that "snooty" accent. GRRRR!!!

I was SO happy for The Hurt Locker and for Sandra. I think she's so elegant and beautiful (even though she made Speed 2 and Miss Congeniality 2). And I LOVE that she made her beau cry:)

Amen on eye candy Gerard Butler and Ryan Reynolds!

  15. Thanks SO much for the play-by-play. I don't have cable, but even if I did I could never sit through an awards show. I've seen headlines here and there and know the major news, but again, thanks for sharing the little details!!

And I agree, Gerard plus Bradley equals YUM!

  16. I only caught a little bit of it......(not really an awards show person)....and I think it was way more entertaining with your play by play here!
