Sun Sauce

You would think that, living in the glorious wonderland of Southern California, my skin would be permanently bronzed to golden perfection.

False.

I spend about 90% of my daylight hours indoors. Between work, countless meetings, and sometimes sleeping, the most sun I see during the week is that sliver of blinding light cresting the top of the mountains on my morning commute.

Because I don't see much of the sun and have a general fear/abhorrence of tanning beds--

(I would SO be the girl that gets stuck inside and slowly bakes to death.)

--I am always looking for a decent tanning product that won't give me freaky streaky skin, or turn me into an Oompa Loompa, or emphasize the lines in my knees and elbows.

That's why, when I was offered the chance to try Sun Sauce, I jumped at it.

Here's the product description from the company:
This vitamin rich formula sunless lotion leaves no streaks, no lines, just a slow progression toward bronze perfection. Bathe your body in our very intense wrinkle fighting, anti aging Moisturizer while adding just a hint of color to your silky smooth skin. Keep your skin as soft and supple as possible with this perfectly blended moisture rich new Sun Sauce anti aging skin firming formula.
Now, fortunately I don't have too much of an issue yet with wrinkles and aged skin. But I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible. I mean, I'm 33 now. Young and healthy, yes, but I'm not getting any younger. Have to start taking care of my skin now before I look like I'm going on 83.

The first thing I noticed about the Sun Sauce Moisturizer was the aroma. It's a little bit different, but pleasant and natural. Not overwhelming or perfume-y, and since I have a bit of an aversion to strong scents, I was happy to discover this.

The moisturizer is thick, which was something else I liked. I absolutely HATE runny lotions because they're messy and don't get the job done. I thought the texture here was ideal. Thick, creamy, not greasy. It took a little bit of effort to distribute the product evenly, but it really does moisturize well. I haven't felt the need to use any additional lotions throughout the day.

(Well, except on my hands, but that's only because I wash them about 15-20 times a day.)

(I know, that's probably a lot for someone who doesn't work around children, old people, animals, or in a hospital...It's just how I am.)

Anyways, as far as the hint of color...well, I haven't seen a big difference yet. I've noticed a tiny bit of color on my pasty legs, but when I tried a before and after photo, you couldn't even see it in the picture.

So, basically, as a moisturizer, I felt this product lived up to its promises and I was very pleased. For real color results, I'm planning to try their Sunless Lotion line, which says you can get dark, rich color and fast results. I mean, this is California, folks. It's March 2, which means it's practically already shorts weather. I can't go around frightening small children with my glow-in-the-dark legs!

Sun Sauce Moisturizer with a touch of  Sunless retails for $20 for a large 18-oz bottle. I'd say it's worth it. You can order it online by visiting the Sun Sauce website.

  1. I've tried using various self-tanning lotions over the years, and I have to say that the scent always gets to me—although spray tanning is even worse (when it comes to smell).

  2. Glad to know about this product, and wish it gave more color. I avoid the sun if I can - with skin cancer in my family, it's just a smart thing to do.

    Maybe I'll try it out.

    Oompa Loompa - hilarious!

  3. I long for the days of yore when pale skin was all the rage. When it was a symbol of status, because you could afford to be inside all day instead of out tilling the fields.

I come from a long line of pale people. We do not tan. Ever.

Sunless tanning does weird things to my skin. I have yet to ever see sunless tanning that didn't LOOK like sunless tanning. So, I stick with the pale.

  5. I'm with NIKOL! but I don't think pale will ever be cool or fashionable ever....sigh.

I have tried the stuff that gradually gives you color each time you use it and it worked pretty well on me. I didn't look tan, but it gave me color, which is saying a LOT. :-) I think it was Jergen's, maybe? I know it when I see it in the store.

  8. I've tried sunless tanners because first of all, I'm ghostly pale and second, attempts to tan result in me turning red. There are some that work better than others. I like Dove's or Jergen's gradually tanning lotions. I know they don't compare to the real thing, but sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures.

  9. It's good to read your review! Self-tanners always make me nervous without hearing any feedback from someone who's already used it!

  10. My mother had a melanoma a few years back so there have been and never will be any tanning beds for me or my family. I did lay out as a teen and the skin cancer was a pretty big advertisement for a whole bunch of sun screen at all times. Therefore I made a brief foray into the world of sunless tanning lotion, had some kind of reaction, got really itchy and will forever be pale for the rest of my life.

  11. As a fair-skinned redhead, I don't tan, I pink and when I do I immediately notice a change in the feel of my skin. I used to try to get some color anyway but over the last few years, I've given up because the risk isn't worth it.

I have always been leary of trying self-tanning products. I remember using one when I was a teen and the result was that it looked like someone had peed on me. Not the look I was going for. I know they have come a long way in the last 40 years but still a little afraid. Maybe I will try this one since you like the moisturizing ability, too.
