Kid Therapy

It's no secret that, out of all the children in the entire world, the cutest happens to be my nephew.

It's because of this inarguable fact that I pounce on any opportunity to spend a couple of hours with him. Seriously. I get SAD whenever I have to say no to my brother and sister-in-law. The kid is that adorable.

And hilarious. I don't know how four-year-olds can have such well-developed senses of humor.

(Especially when I know more than one forty-year-old still waiting for theirs to kick in.)

Marc and I conspired last night. He would take Kristi out to a lovely birthday dinner while I hung out with The Nephew.

The Nephew has boundless energy. BOUNDLESS. I'm pretty sure he would actually bounce off the walls if we let him.

(In fact, he may have done that once or twice while I wasn't looking.)

(Not that I wasn't looking. Because I'm 100% responsible and keep an eye on him AT ALL TIMES.)

We talked and laughed and ate Chicken McNuggets and played a game he made up and whose name escapes me, but it involved him being Spider-Man and me being the Sandman and getting kicked in the head.

I might have accidentally introduced him to the concept of cannibalism. Maybe. He said something about eating brains and it's possible that I said there are places where they do that. He crinkled up his little nose and said, "Really? Where?"

"In outer space," I said quickly, realizing that if I didn't make up something silly, there would be even MORE to explain to his mother later.

"That's right," he said. "Aliens eat brains. But not the good aliens. ET doesn't eat anyone's brain."

Best babysitter ever.

But the best conversation of the night:

Me: Where does Daddy work?
The Nephew: Seattle.
Me: Seattle?? No, in California.
The Nephew: California? Okay.
Me: Does he sometimes go to Washington, DC?
The Nephew: Yes.
Me: Do you know who else works in Washington, DC?
The Nephew: No.
Me: The President of the United States. Do you know who the President is?
The Nephew: Barack Obama.
Me: Good! And do we like him?
The Nephew: Yes!
Me: Uh...Who's the best President?
The Nephew: Barack Obama.
Me: Nooooooo. Ronald Reagan.
The Nephew: Ronald Reagan?
Me: Yes! Now, who's the best President?
The Nephew: Barack Obama!
Me: Clearly we have some work to do.
The Nephew: Yup.

Phase 1 of Indoctrinate The Nephew is still in progress...

  2. Just to clarify- his dear parents are hard-core conservatives so he didn't learn this from them. Apparently, our evenings spent watching Hannity and Glenn Beck are not doing enough! I might point out that Matty actually said he liked Glenn Beck!

  3. I want to know how so many 4 year olds know who the president is! I didn't know who the president was until 2nd grade! My 4 year old neice said "Obama is good." We said, "SAY WHAT?" It's just sad that children are being taught. We are such a brainwashed society! But I totally encourage brainwashing against Obama though...now my neice says Obama is bad.

  4. Your nephew is brilliant.

And I hope we can still be friends even though I like Obama.

  5. Your nephew is darling. (Although I have to disagree and say that my kids are cuter! :) )

My son actually voted for Obama during their school's mock elections. When I asked him why, he said because he didn't like the girl on the other team.

  8. Go Nephew!

I actually had a dream involving
Bill Clinton last night. I don't think I've ever had a dream about a president before.

  9. You better start your nephew's intervention soon.

I love my neices and nephews too. I wish they lived closer to me.

  10. What's alarming is that to his generation, Ronald Reagan is like Kennedy or Nixon was to us...somebody we heard about but couldn't really relate to because it was way before our time.
