Bring On the Popcorn!

It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that I LOVE the summer movie season.

I mean, I love movies ANY time of year, but the summer movies are the ones where I can escape the heat, kick back with some popcorn, and be mindlessly entertained for a couple of hours without my brain ranking the film's award potential.

Some summers are awesome. Almost too awesome. Where there are huge must-sees being released every week and someone on a limited income can't possibly hope to see them all.

Some years are a little more lean. The big offerings are few and far between and a lot of them don't deliver.

This year looks like it's going to be somewhere in the middle.

There are some seriously anticipated releases, and most of them look like they will be worth almost every penny of the ticket (over)price.

Since the first of the Summer Blockbusters hits theaters TOMORROW, I thought I'd do a quick summation of the movies I really can't wait for, the ones I'm not yet sure about, and the ones I wouldn't see if you dragged me kicking and screaming and promised me an endless supply of popcorn, Coke, and chocolate. (That list is short.)

Instead of posting the trailers and slowing down my page way too much, if you click on the movie titles, that will take you to the links to see the trailers you might not have caught yet. Or the ones you want to watch on Repeat. I'm not judging.

MUST SEES:
5/7 Iron Man 2
I saw the first one because I'm a huge Robert Downey, Jr fan. I didn't really know anything about Iron Man and I didn't necessarily care all that much. I was totally impressed with the first one, and can't wait for the second...even if it does mean having to look at Mickey Rourke. Luckily, I don't have to wait long since it's the first big movie of the season.

6/11 The A-Team
I've probably seen every episode of The A-Team ever filmed and I loved them all. Murdock was always my favorite. I'm not totally convinced of Liam Neeson as Hannibal, but with Bradley Cooper playing Face and Patrick Wilson as their nemesis, Lynch, Hannibal could be played by Paris Hilton's dog and I'd still see it.

6/18 Toy Story 3
Huge fan of the first two. I'm really excited for one more adventure with Woody and Buzz and Potato Head and Bo Peep and all the rest. It won't quite be the same without Jim Varney, though. But I'm sure it's still going to be great!

6/25 Knight and Day
Um...Tom Cruise. Of COURSE I'm gonna see it! Although, I'm glad that it also looks really awesome and hilarious, too. Tom needs to do more comedy.

8/6 The Other Guys
Another of those funny buddy-cop movies. I know a lot of people don't like him, but I think Will Ferrell is hilarious. And teamed up with Mark Wahlberg? Pure awesomeness. I had a chance to go to an advanced screening last week, but had to pass it up because there was somewhere else I had to be. Booo.

8/20 The Switch
Patrick Wilson (♥) co-stars with Jennifer Aniston (meh...) and Jason Bateman in a comedy that (thankfully!) changed its name after Miramax went under. It was originally called The Baster. Good change, eh? Anyway, I am not a big Aniston fan anymore, but I do want to see this. Because Patrick Wilson and Jason Bateman are awesome.

HAVEN'T DECIDED:
5/14 Robin Hood
On the one hand, do we really need ANOTHER Robin Hood movie? On the other...It's Russell Crowe. I think I'll withhold judgment until the weekend box office numbers come in.

6/11 The Karate Kid
Dear Columbia Pictures: Karate is Japanese, not Chinese. Until I wrap my brain around this egregious error, and the concept of Jackie Chan as a mentor, I cannot guarantee that I will see your movie.

6/25 Eclipse
I dunno...It's that whole Twilight thing...

(And no...I don't apologize for not linking to the real trailer. This version is MUCH more entertaining...)

7/2 The Last Airbender
I've never seen a Shyamalan movie I didn't like. But...isn't this based on a kid's show from Nickelodeon? I just don't know about that.

NOT ON YOUR LIFE:
MacGruber

So...which movies are you excited about? And which do you plan to avoid like the State of Arizona?

  1. I'm on the fence about Iron Man 2, but I do like Robert Downey Jr and thought the first one was ok. I want to see A-Team, loved the show and love Bradley Cooper. Is Knight and Day the one with Cameron Diaz? If so, I cannot stand her and I refuse to watch any movie with her in it. I saw a trailer awhile back for The Switch and I wish they had chosen a different actress. I'm kinda tired of Jennifer Anniston and I don't think she has as much star power as Hollywood wants to believe. I'm not sure why they made another Robin Hood, but I am curious since Russell Crowe is in it. And I agree about MacGruber. I can't believe they even made that dumb movie.

  2. p.s. I couldn't care less about the new Twilight movie. Seriously, I'm tired of the bad acting and melodrama. I'll watch it eventually just because I watched the first two, but I'll be happy when they're all done. I'm not even sure I like the story anymore.

  3. I love this post! Jeff and I hardly ever get out to the movies anymore so we are pretty selective about what we are willing to put in time and money for. The cool thing is that when we do go- we go all out with popcorn and soda and stuff. :) And lots of hand holding and snuggling, too.

Anyway- your list is a good guide for me to help me focus!

Our must see will most likely be Ironman. But that might be one Jeff goes to see with his comic and gaming buddies instead of with me. We will most likely take the kids to see Toy Story 3 as a family date.

I'm SO TIRED of remakes of perfectly good the first time around movies. Jackie Chan is going to be the next Myagi? Say huh??

I've not seen ANY Twilight movies. None. I read 2 of the books and it hurt my brain to read them so I've not had much interest in the movies.

I am not a fan of the continuing Macgruber skits on SNL so I am most certainly NOT going to waste even a penny on that one.

Last Airbender might be high on the list- I am a fan of M. Night...

  4. I'm excited for Robinhood and A Team because well, Russell Crowe and Bradley Cooper. KNight and Day looks fun too but it looks a lot like the Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl moving coming out too...I think it's the same script but a few rewrites later...

    I love summer movies.

  5. Can't they just leave remakes alone? I haven't seen a movie in a really long time. Boo.

  6. I go to the movies very, very rarely so I don't really get pumped up for new releases that often. Of course I will be seeing Eclipse on opening night because on one hand, I am a squealing 14 year old on the inside. On the other hand, I know the books are crap and I enjoy mocking people. Both sides win with the Twilight movies.

I am decidedly against Russell Crowe's Robin Hood movie. ENOUGH WITH ROBIN HOOD, ALREADY!

Seriously, what were they thinking making a MacGruber movie? MacGruber has ONE joke. I actually love Will Forte and Kristin Wiig, but there's no way that this is going to be the summer's Pirates of the Caribbean, you know?

  7. R is trying to convince me to see Iron Man, but I'm not sure. I'm very particular in my movie tastes. But I do like Robert Downey Jr. so maybe I'll go.

  8. (Cough, cough) Where is SATC 2 on this list? Can not wait to see that! So excited! :)

  9. We're planning on seeing one of our three annual movies soon (Yeah for date nights.) While we will definitely go see Toy Story 3 with the entire family (we are huge Pixar fans!), I think that Hubster and I will see either Iron Man 2 or Robin Hood. Yes, it's another Robin Hood movie, but have you really, really liked any of the other ones? I for one, haven't. And it's Russell Crow!! I will also see Eclipse, because it's the perfect excuse for a girl's night out. All the other ones...I'll be honest, I'm going to have to watch the previews you linked to. I'm clueless. If it's not plastered all over McDonald's Kids Meals or Dr. Pepper cans, I'd probably miss it.

  10. I was going to do a post about the mysterious voodoo magic that is the Knight & Day trailer, and how it ACTUALLY makes me want to see a Tom Cruise movie. How did they do that? It's a modern-day miracle.

  11. I didn't know Toy Story 3 was coming out! I am ALL about that!

  12. Iron Man 2, Eclipse (duh!), Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After, The Expendables, Grown Ups, Sex and the City 2, Prince of Persia, Little Fockers

I think it could be a great summer.

  13. Think I might have to catch the A-Team in the theater.

  14. I'll probably see Eclipse and call it good. Man, I'm boring! :)

  15. My homies and I will see Eclipse and Sex and the City. Wylee wants to see The Last Airbender (he's a fan of the cartoon). I kinda want to see Robin Hood, because Russell Crowe is so delicious, but it's been so done before. And not just the Robin Hood theme, but the whole epic we've-been-wronged-and-we must-now-rise-up-and-fight-for-our-freedom.

  17. I am a BIG movie fan too and I LOVE your list of MUST SEE's. So I will probably go with that also. Unfortunately, I don't get to go to the movies all that often anymore due to schedules and things like that. And the prices now days are killer! We will see what I can fit in! Enjoy your summer movies!

  18. As someone who spent 14 years living in hell (I mean AZ), your last sentence has me rolling on the floor. Love it! couldn't have said it better.

Now about those movies. The only one I want to see is Robin Hood. I absolutely LOVE Russell Crowe movies. He is an amazing actor and never disappoints. I used to think he was a great actor, but a terrible person, but I recently saw an interview of him with Oprah and I've changed my mind. I think he might actually be a decent human being. Maybe?
