Confession Wednesday: Moving Day
Confession Wednesday is back!
And in honor of the big move at work that is going oh so smoothly....
Uh...
Ahem.
Well, anyway, I've had moving on the brain this week and I thought it might make a good confession topic, since I'm fairly certain we've all been through at least one move in our lives.
Here's my confession.
I'm really lousy at moving.
Terrible.
Like, still putting stuff in boxes as my helpful volunteer movers are backing the truck into the driveway. That kind of terrible.
When I moved to Utah? I had to delay my departure by a day because I had barely started packing two days before.
Every time I moved to a new place in Utah, it took at least a week to finish getting all my stuff.
When the time came to move from Utah back to California, my mom flew up to Salt Lake to help. The whole thing seemed like a good idea at the time, but turned out to be pretty dumb. The plan was for me to rent a U-Haul, load it up, and then my mom would help me make the long drive through the Utah desert.
(Which is bad enough in your own comfortable car, but downright SUCKS in a big old stinky rental van.)
And then when we got to California, we'd unload the U-Haul, I'd fly back to Utah to finish two more weeks of work, then pack up my car and leave for good.
While my roommate-at-the-time Kelli and her brother Joe attempted to Tetris all of my belongings into the back of the truck, my mom and I were in the house. Packing. Because I'd had six entire weeks to get everything together. And did I do it? Nope.
Because, of course, I'm the world's worst procrastinator.
Which doesn't mix well with moving.
No matter how much advance planning you give yourself.
Even with this move at work. From one building to another. I packed three boxes. And guess when I did it. That's right. On my last day of work before I left for the month.
Because I'm awesome.
And by "awesome" I mean lame.

I've been living in this places 6 years and there are boxes I haven't opened. I don't know what's in them.
ReplyDeleteI opened one box over the Christmas period and found a can of Jim Beam that was "Best before 16/03/04"
Ahh, moving Karen. Good, good times. Moving is like painting. It's kind of exciting for like 5 minutes and then you just think "I really don't want to do this"... then let the packing happen. And my roommate now is the 2nd greatest roommate ever if you searched the world over- didn't mean to dis ya!
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I have noticed a mysterious phenomenon. Anytime we are moving and my parents offer to help my father winds up with a bad headache that day and is unable to do anything but sit in a chair and moan about his aching head, while every once in awhile giving orders about how the truck should be loaded.
ReplyDeleteI'm much to organized to be a slacker when it comes to moving...or unpacking. But I'm sure I have some story...oh wait, yes I do.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I always moved ourselves: packed everything, hauled everything, unpacked everything. Then one time we were moving into a new apartment and couldn't get the couch through the door. It was a hide-a-bed, too, so it was super heavy. I was so exhausted and frustrated that I screamed, "I am never doing this again!" And I haven't. We've moved 2 times since, and I've hired movers.
ReplyDeleteWe hired movers the last time Adam and I moved, and it was the best $200 we spent.
ReplyDeleteIf you think YOU'RE bad at moving, have you ever helped a bachelor move? Seriously. They don't put ANYTHING in boxes. You show up on moving day and they have a stack of boxes in the corner without a thing in them. That is -- if you're lucky, they have boxes. Sometimes they just figure they'll throw all their stuff in the back of the truck and hope it doesn't get broken.
ReplyDeleteI am a terrible packer, which I am regretting this week...I just stuffed everything into boxes and drawers in my classroom and it's going to take even longer to unpack now. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteMy confession is: I'm good at moving, And I mean REALLY good at moving. Keep that a secret:-) Probably b/c I have moved so many times in my life I have the technique down. It got to the point that when we found really good boxes when we moved, I would save them to use the next time (b/c I was sure it was going to be soon). However, last time Aaron and I moved we did hire movers and I really was the best $200 we have spent.
ReplyDeleteWhen we moved from our apartment into our house, my husband refused to ask anyone to help us. So we basically did all the moving ourselves, with a bit of help from assorted family members. Of course, it helped that when we moved we basically junked most of our furniture. Most of our furniture was cruddy second hand stuff we bought as newlyweds, so it wasn't even fit to be donated. (Did I mention it was all mostly black laquer? Sexay!!) So we just hired a hauling company to come take it away.
ReplyDeleteI'd totally hire a moving company if we could afford it.
I hate moving myself and my belongings...BUT when it comes to moving my kids 2 hours closer, it is the absolute most fun thing in the world! Just happened to do that very thing this past weekend!!! YAY!
ReplyDeleteI think when moving, it doesn't matter how far ahead of time you start, there's always a ton of stuff to do last minute :-)
ReplyDeleteDuring college and the few years afterwards, I moved every 6 months. I'm not sure why, maybe I was addicted. My friends HATED it because I'd always recruit them to help.
ReplyDeleteThe last couple moves we did we actually hired movers. I packed everything up into boxes but let the movers put everything in the truck and unload too. So much easer!
You are the polar opposite of me! I packed up our townhouse about three months before we actually moved. We had three bowls and three spoons to use as we navigated our box maze. It was terrible.
ReplyDeleteI did better moving from the apartment to this house.
It's all about moderation.
I really don't like moving. Last time my wife and I moved we hired movers to move our stuff 3 miles. We still had to move a lot of stuff on our own. That was nearly 13 years ago. I still have some boxes packed away in the garage so I've got a head start on the next move.
