Big Sister Fail
The turkey was perfect and the sides were delicious and Aunt Peggy thanked me profusely for that summer Marc and I spent at her house rolling pennies from a 5-gallon water barrel. Twenty years ago.
All in all it was a great way to spend the holiday. Of course, it helped that my dad cooked up some of my grandpa's incredible Split Pea Soup and even let me take some home.
At some point on Thursday, however, when I was hanging out with my younger siblings, it was brought to my attention that I have been a terrible big sister. I have seriously fallen down on the job and I'm not sure if there's any way to repair the damage I have done.
While chatting with my sister about I-don't-even-know-what, I casually dropped into the conversation that I really, really, REALLY want to go to the NKOTBSB Concert Of the Century in July.
She said, and I quote, "You are, like, 500 years old."
Okay, that's not actually what she said. But she certainly implied it.
No interest. None. She doesn't want to go.
How is this possible? What have I done?
Clearly I have shirked my responsibility in teaching my sister to love and appreciate bad sideburns, questionable dancing skills, and the general awesomeness that is the Boy Band.
I have failed.
So what can I do?
Is it too late to brainwash a 17-year-old into believing that this will be the coolest concert EVER?
Can I repair the damage? Or do I have to pray for a niece and vow not to make the same mistakes again?

She's only seventeen? Naw, there's still hope!
ReplyDeleteWell, did she really think you'd be up for something like say...Justin Bieber?
ReplyDeleteDrag her along with you!
ReplyDeleteMmmmm, split pea soup. That is precisely what I have in the crock pot this very moment making my house smell like heaven (mixed with the aroma of fresh baked bread). It will be a miracle if there's any left when Jay gets home at 6 tonight!
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely take her with you! ( I love the new look, by the way!)
ReplyDeleteI will go with you! If they don't add a SLC stop, I might have to drive to Vegas. It will be that awesome.
ReplyDeleteHilarious! I was sitting there thinking, "New Kids on the Block? They're still around???"
ReplyDeletewow, I think I missed the debut of the new blog look! it is great, love it!
ReplyDeleteLove the new look! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea who NKOTBSB was until I read Stephanie's comment. Still not sure about the SB at the end. Must be because I'm 600 years old!
At 17, she's probably into the Bieber boy, or however you spell it.
ReplyDeleteI had great older sibs! Music-wise, that is. I grew up with The Doors, Elton John, YES, Fleetwood Mac, ELO, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, etc.
Classic Rock...ROCKS! : )
Ok, first off I LOVE THE NEW BLOG. It is freakin' awesome!
ReplyDeleteSecond, your sister SERIOUSLY needs to learn the awesomeness that is THE BOY BAND. You Tube all their music videos, interviews, the clips of the girls crying when they see them in concert, ANYTHING to get her to go to it!
By the way, I think going to this show would be so dang hilarious and just one of those things that, while humiliating, I'd brag about to all my friends.
:)
Maybe I should make a trip in July so I can go to this concert bc they aren't coming to Ohio!
ReplyDeleteHeck, I'll go with you!!!! I watched them on the Music Awards and it was totally worth watching the entire thing to see them at the end of the show!!! I was singing all those songs right along with them...and they're still HOT!!!
ReplyDeleteTell her she's missing out BIG time if she doesn't go with you!
BTW, I love totally love your new header!!!!!!!
I think the only thing you can do is take me to the concert with you. Then we can both brag to our younger sisters about how we are so ultimately cool. They're going to be so jealous!
ReplyDeleteI didn't have any siblings so I was tortured by my parents' taste in music...it meant I developed an unhealthy liking for Dean Martin....yeah I know who? :)
ReplyDelete(Don't worry I have improved and can even 'get down' with the latest tastes although rapping to my son's Eminem cd was pretty embarrassing)
I can see this situation from both sides. But clearly you don't have to be a "fan" (per se) of the bands to understand the awesome pop culture factor. I mean, when Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were going on tour together, clearly it was going to be epic. Even though Vanilla Ice only had ONE song. Didn't matter. Just saying you saw the two of them together was enough. Same thing with NKOTBSB. It's not just a concert. It's a pop culture EVENT!
ReplyDeleteTeenagers... what can we do about them? :) Love the new look around here, by the way.
ReplyDeleteWell, hate to admit it to a fan, but as a 36 year old woman who was in high school during the heydays of NKOTB... I am sooooo not a fan. SO maybe your sis can just hang out with me and we can do actually cool stuff instead of going to the concert? ;)
ReplyDeleteI fail to convince people about the awesomeness of Britney all the time. Sadly some people just don't recognize greatness ;)
ReplyDeleteThere's still some hope, though you may have to ease her in gently. Rather than boy bands, try to break her in with the 'man band' that Take That are putting forward in the UK. That might make it easier on her :P
ReplyDeleteI don't know if there's any hope of transforming a new teen into a fan of the old school boy bands. The new ones are just so much more savvy, in both dance skills and the music they sing along to. I would pat yourself on the back, tho, and confirm that it has nothing to do with your sister skills. It's just the modern music movement that's done it. There you go, no guilt. An early Christmas present from me! ; )
ReplyDeleteNKOTB came here two summers ago. My girlfriends and I went and had a great time. They're not slated to come here so far. The closest they're coming is Chicago. We're thinking ROAD TRIP!
ReplyDeleteYou should make her go just so she can see the "old ladies" fangirling. Seriously, IT'S THE BEST EVER.
