nook™ vs. Kindle and Why I Care So Much

I know, I know. Some of you out there think that eBooks are the devil and that I'm going to a special level of Hell for wanting one.

But, hey, at least I'll have something good to read.

In the past few weeks, I've mentioned once or twice that I really want a nook™ and specifically the nookcolor™ and a couple of people have asked why I prefer the nook™ to the Kindle.

It's pretty simple, really.

For starters, I walked into a Barnes and Noble and played with a nook™ to my heart's delight. I have yet to actually get a Kindle into my hands because, oddly enough, there aren't too many stores that stock it on the shelves. In fact, Target is the only one I know of and I just haven't made it to that section in the handful of times I've ventured my local Target since they first started offering it back in June.

Then there's the fact that the Kindle library currently offers around a half a million titles. Which is a TON of books. Until you compare it with the two million plus that are available from Barnes and Noble with the nook™.

nook™ has a heck of a lot more available memory, both internally and with a micro SD slot for external memory that can hold more books than I will ever read in my lifetime.

There's also the lending feature that allows me not only to lend and borrow books from friends that have nooks, but also to read books while I'm IN Barnes and Noble.

As great as Amazon is, there's really no comparison.

Why the nookcolor™ instead of the standard nook™? Because of all the stuff I do. I like to read books. But I also like magazines and newspapers, and I think we've established how much I like reading blogs. It all looks so nice and pretty on the nookcolor™.

I know the battery life basically sucks on the nookcolor™, but I can't imagine any circumstance where I would desperately need to use it for 8 hours in a row without the ability to recharge it somewhere in between.

I mean, until I get to that special level of Hell for having an eReader in the first place.

  1. I love my Nook so much. I want the color version, but will probably have to wait to get one after the new year.

  2. I received a Kindle as a gift, and I love it! But it is just for reading...the black/white screen is really easy on the eyes. The one thing I don't like is that you can read library books the way you can on the Nook.

  3. I am not on the Ereader bandwagon.

BTW, I love the new header!

  4. Karen, you're preaching to the choir here :) I want a Kindle so badly! Being in the UK means that the Nook is totally accessible to me (or is it? *goes and checks* Nah, not really).

I love the idea of sharing books via the Nook though, and I wish the Kindle did a colour version (that way I could enjoy The Way of Kings as it was meant to be seen) but I think us Brits will have to make do :(

  5. you make a good argument!

I always thought an eReader would be nice to take along to a doctor's appointment or anywhere else that you have time to kill while waiting...or at work to read during lunch (where I worked everyone ate at their desks). Otherwise, I still prefer a good old fashioned book. :-)

  6. Go for the color!
I have an iPad, and while it's way more than an eReader, the color is amazing.
I also read graphic novels on it, which would really lack in black and white.

  7. I don't know if I'd ever buy either. I don't read as much as I should (although I just started The Confession and so far I love it), so until I get back into the habit I'll stick to regular books for now. :)

  9. I've never been in to ereaders, but then my co-worker gave me his "old" Kindle when the new version came out. I have just downloaded a bunch of free books on it so far. And while it's still not my preferred method of reading (nothing can match the feeling of a book), it has it's positives sometimes.

If I ever spend my own money on something akin to an ereader, I'll probably go for the ipad - but I'll wait until they improve the battery life and other functions, first :)

  10. I so want one for Christmas. I wasn't sure which one, but I like your review here. It helps in my decision making. So... you can read blogs on the Nook too?????

  11. For my sister's b-day, her hubby offered her either a scooter or a Kindle. She chose the scooter because, as she told me, "Part of the pleasure of reading is turning the page."

I would take the scooter too...if I could actually ride one, that is. ; )

  12. I have no desire for a nook or a Kindle.

But I hope you get yours. :)

  13. I feel the same way about Nook/Kindle as I did about digital cameras. For the longest time, I was sure there was no way it would be as good as the old-school way. But I'm sure they'll get me in the end.

  14. I will have to get out from under this rock I call home and look into the nook! I would love to get an ebook reader of some sort within the next few months.

  15. I thought about getting a nook or a kindle, but I don't think I'm ready yet. I like thumbing through the pages of my book, seeing how much I've read, how much I have left. I love buying bookmarks (and then using random scraps of paper to actually mark my place). I've told The Agent that I'm sure the kids will have ereaders in school, but they'll be making fun of me because I'll be old school with my dusty book shelves!

  16. I am one of those who thinks that e-books are the devil, but because I like you - I suppose I won't put up too much of a fuss here! :p

  17. The Nook sounds so cool! I just read about it today but didn't know about all of those groovy features. I asked for an iPad for Christmas and I'm pretty sure I got it. Maybe I can get my husband the Nook... he definitely didn't want a Kindle. I think he would really love the Nook. Thanks for all the info!

  18. I still can't decide what to get Kenny but I have to decide because he won't leave my Sony e-reader alone.
